Sightseeing / Highlights
Flying to Kenya & Tanzania Flying time to Tanzania from gateway cities in the eastern U.S. averages between 20 and 30 hours, and may include a stop-over in Europe; most international flights arrive between 7:00 PM and 12:00 noon local time, 8 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time. To ease the effects of jet lag, you may want to consider traveling to Africa a day early. Tauck can book your international flights for travel originating in the U.S., including arranging an extra night at Serena Mountain Village, Arusha, for the evening before your journey begins, giving you time to rest and relax. Ask for details upon booking. 1. Arrive Arusha, Tanzania Tour begins: Serena Mountain Village, Arusha. Transfers are included from Kilimanjaro International Airport to the Serena Mountain Village, Arusha, for an overnight stay. 2. Lake Manyara National Park Kick off your amazing African safari* by setting out on a four-night safari to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains, traveling through Lake Manyara National Park for your first unforgettable experience at wildlife viewing. Along with abundant giraffes, baboons and elephants, Lake Manyara is home to a multitude of birds, including great birds of prey. Continue on to Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to an estimated 30,000 large mammals. Please join us for a welcome reception and dinner at your lodge; built directly into the rim of vast Ngorongoro Crater, it overlooks the caldera’s lush, wildlife-rich floor far below. Meals BLD 3. Ngorongoro Crater Experience the Africa of bygone days when you explore the “lost world” of Ngorongoro Crater, believed by many to have been Africa’s original “Garden of Eden.” Within this dormant volcano’s walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake, inspiring the continual migration of animals. From aboard your four-wheel-drive vehicle, you’ll have an opportunity to spot Africa’s renowned Big Five – buffalo, elephant, leopard, the black-maned lion and the endangered, rare black rhinoceros – as well as herds of zebras, wildebeests and gazelles. A hot lunch in the crater will be a highlight of your day. Meals BLD 4. Olduvai Gorge / Serengeti A memorable day begins with a visit to Olduvai Gorge; it was here, 50 years ago, that archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered the fossilized remains of some of the earliest known human species. Enjoy game viewing as you drive to your wilderness lodge in Serengeti National Park; be prepared for bumps and bounces along the unpaved roads. Your comfortable stone-built lodge accommodations for the next two nights were inspired by the traditional circular dwellings of Maasai villages. Meals BLD 5. Serengeti National Park Morning and afternoon game drives take you into the heart of the golden Serengeti savanna today. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth, where diverse habitats sustain an abundance of flora and fauna. You may spot numerous prides of lions, zebras, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, black rhinoceros, hippos, buffalo, jackals, gazelles, and primates. Enjoy the evening under the backdrop of a memorable African sunset. Meals BLD 6. Serengeti to Nairobi Fly to Arusha this morning and cross into Kenya; arrive in Nairobi for lunch at a local restaurant. Visit the Karen Blixen Museum, the former coffee farm and home of the Danish writer (a.k.a. Isak Dinesen) depicted in the film Out of Africa; and learn about East Africa’s different types of giraffes on a guided visit to Nairobi’s Giraffe Center. Meals BLD 7. Plantation Tour/Animal Orphanage Take a guided tour of a private coffee plantation with its owners, then continue to the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club for a two-night stay. After lunch and an equatorial demonstration, spend the afternoon at William Holden’s Animal Orphanage, a sanctuary on the grounds of your retreat that teaches local children to appreciate Africa’s unique wildlife. Meals BLD 8. Village Weavers/Safari Club at Leisure See local villagers shear, spin, and dye and weave sheep’s wool to create colorful rugs, sweaters, and shawls. Return to your resort to swim or just relax; golf and fishing are available at additional cost. Dine à la carte tonight. Meals BLD 9. Samburu National Reserve Drive to the wildlife-rich Samburu National Reserve and settle in at Samburu Serena Safari Lodge for a two-night stay. Look for elephants, baboons, and leopards on a game drive; a talk by a resident guide follows dinner. Meals BLD 10. Game Drives in Samburu Morning and late afternoon game drives combine with a visit to a nearby tribal village and talk with local residents for an in-depth look at life in the Samburu Reserve. Along with storks, elephants and hippos, you may observe some of Africa’s rarest animals on your game drives. Meals BLD 11. Masai Mara Reserve A flight from Samburu takes you to Masai Mara National Reserve in southern Kenya, where Maasai warriors welcome you. Your luxurious tented camp is surrounded on three sides by a river; a late afternoon game drive introduces you to an astounding array of animals. Meals BLD 12. Balloon Ride over the Masai Mara Rise early for an exciting hot air balloon* flight as dawn breaks over the Masai Mara Reserve, capped with an intimate champagne breakfast in the bush. After your final game drive this evening, our farewell dinner at your tented camp is the perfect ending to an amazing safari! Meals BLD 13. Nairobi / Journey Home Fly to Nairobi for your journey home. A day room has been reserved for you at the Nairobi Serena Hotel; depart the hotel for the airport after dinner this evening.
