Explore the most significant archaeological, anthropological and religious sites of two larger-than-life destinations on this discovery journey through Jordan and Israel. Walk the rose-hued halls of Petra and dine with a local family in Madaba, for an encompassing perspective of Jordan's past and present. Then take a panorama of history-rich Israel, from visiting Old City Jerusalem to travelling further afield to discover ancient Roman, Jewish and Christian ruins.

Days 1-2: USA or Canada / Amman, Jordan:

Arrive in Amman, where an A&K representative meets and transfers you to your luxury hotel. The remainder of your day is at leisure to relax or explore the city — the cultural, economic and commercial heart of Jordan — at your own pace.

Meals Served:

Day 3: Amman/Jerash/Amman:

This morning, set off for a city tour of Amman, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Explore its historic sites, including the impressive citadel known as al-Qasr, the Byzantine basilica, the Great Temple of Amman and the Roman Theater. Stop at the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses an excellent collection of antiquities ranging from prehistoric times to the 15th century. In the afternoon, venture to the great Roman city of Jerash, often called “the Pompeii of the Middle East.” Walk along the Street of Columns, where the grooves left by chariot wheels are still visible in its paving stones.

Day 4: Amman/Madaba/Um Al-Rassas/Petra:

Today, travel on the historic King’s Highway through a countryside rich in biblical history toward the “rose-red” city of Petra. Your first stop en route is at Madaba, the “City of Mosaics,” perched on an archaeological site with more than 4,000 years of history buried beneath. Visit St. George’s Church, which houses the world-famous mosaic floor depicting a large map of The Holy Land. It is among the hundreds of other mosaics from the fifth through the seventh centuries scattered throughout Madaba's churches and homes. Continue to Mount Nebo, the site where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land; your vistas include the Dead Sea, the West Bank, the Jordan River, and, on a clear day, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Lunch with a local family in Madaba, and then continue to Umm ar-Rasas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains stunning mosaics dating to AD 785. Arrive in your hotel near Petra to rest for the next day’s exploration.

Day 5: Petra:

Spend a full day exploring the once-thriving capital of Petra, carved from the very mountains surrounding it by the Nabataeans in the third century BC. Pass through the siq, a narrow natural channel of rock leading to the Treasury.

Meals Served: B L

Day 6: Petra/Wadi Rum/Amman:

Depart Petra this morning and continue to Wadi Rum, also known as the “Valley of the Moon” for its lunar landscape of immense rock formations and awesome shapes. Explore the rose-tinted mountains and desert vistas as Lawrence of Arabia did, and see Bedouin camps, home to a hospitable people.

Meals Served: B L

Day 7: Amman/Masada, Israel/Jerusalem:

Cross the border into Israel, home to some of the world’s most historic events. You are met and expedited through immigration and customs, and transferred to Masada. The grand fortress, built by King Herod, was scene of the last stand by the Zealots fighting the Romans; the impressive excavations reveal what life was like for the Israelite soldiers, who eventually took their own lives rather than be enslaved. Then visit the Qumran Caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Continue to Jerusalem and your hotel.

Meals Served: B L

Day 8: Jerusalem:

Start a day of discoveries in Jerusalem’s fabled Old City, driving to the Mount of Olives for a view of the city below and the Garden of Gethsemane. In the Old City, visit the Western Wall, and view the el-Aksa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. Continue to the Via Dolorosa and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection. You also meander the Jewish Quarter before leaving for Mount Zion to view the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu. Your busy day ends with a stop at the Tomb of King David and the Upper Room, where the Last Supper is believed to have taken place.

Meals Served: B L

Day 9: Jerusalem/Bethlehem/Jerusalem:

This morning’s sightseeing starts at Yad Vashem, a leading institution in Shoah education and research; here you find a memorial honoring the Jewish lives lost to the Holocaust. Then visit the Israel Museum, viewing the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) en route. At the museum, examine the legendary Dead Sea Scrolls. This afternoon, drive to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity.

Meals Served: B

Day 10: Jerusalem/Beit Shean/Sea of Galilee/Tiberias:

Today, journey north into the Jordan Valley and on to Beit Shean to one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheaters. Cruise the Sea of Galilee by boat, and stop at Capernaum, the ancient synagogue where Jesus taught. See St. Peter’s House, which was later converted into a church, before visiting Tabgha, where the miracle of the loaves and fishes is said to have occurred. Continue to the Mount of Beatitudes — site of the Sermon of the Mount — and continue overland to Tiberias.

Meals Served: B L

Day 11: Tiberias/Acre/Golan Heights/Tiberias:

Venture to Acre, the ancient Phoenician and Crusader seaport once held by Ottoman Turks and so important that Napoleon tried to take capture it, to no avail. Tour the Knights’ Hall and the bustling covered markets. This afternoon, drive up to the Golan Heights, a rocky plateau overlooking the Sea of Galilee, and stop at Banias, where you see archaeological remains that span the pagan, Jewish, Roman, Byzantine and Muslim eras.

Meals Served: B L

Day 12: Tiberias/Caesarea/Tel Aviv:

This morning, set off for Caesarea, a 2,000-year-old city built in honor of Augustus Caesar. Then travel to the artist colony of Jaffa, which you discover during a walking tour through its narrow, winding alleys, charming fisherman’s port and colorful artist quarter. Gather tonight for a special farewell dinner.
