Depart by overnight flight to Nairobi. On arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel.
Daphne Sheldrick and her late husband David, the first game warden of Tsavo National Park, were early pioneers of Kenya's conservation efforts. Drive to their home, where Mrs Sheldrick established a private orphanage to care for young wild animals, primarily elephant and rhino, until they can be returned to the wild in Tsavo National Park. Observe the calves bathing in the mud hole and watch as human surrogate mothers bottle-feed the young animals. Continue to Giraffe Manor, located on a scenic 15-acre park. Giraffe Centre, the headquarters of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, is also on the grounds. You are able to hand feed the resident giraffes at eye level from a raised platform. Nearby, relive Kenya's colorful past when you visit the Karen Blixen home, made famous by the film Out of Africa. Stroll the lovely garden that has fabulous views of the Ngong Hills and pause for lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. This afternoon, visit Nyumbani Children's Home, which receives support from A&K Philanthropy. The home helps care for 100 HIV+ orphans. This evening, gather for a special welcome dinner and safari briefing hosted by Abercrombie & Kent.
Travel overland to Nanyuki and your first bush camp. Stop on the way at Nanyuki Spinners & Weavers, a women's self-help project that trains impoverished widowed and single women to spin and weave sheep's wool on handlooms. They then sell the rugs and blankets they made to generate income for their families and at the same time become self-reliant. Meet some of the women and learn how this project has changed their lives. Continue to your camp, located in the heart of its own private game reserve. Sweetwaters Tented Camp is a sheltered oasis with magnificent views across the game-filled plains to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. Embark on your first game drive this afternoon, crossing the savannah grasslands and travelling along the riverine forests that border the Ewaso Nyiro River. Watch elephant, buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, eland, oryx, hartebeest and leopard that live here.
Drive to the semi-arid bush country known as the Northern Frontier District, home to the Samburu Game Reserve. Many wildlife species not found in other Kenya parks thrive here in Samburu, including Grevy's zebra, the long-necked gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe and the beisa oryx. On game drives you may also see lion, cheetah, dik-dik and the elusive leopard. Your "home" for the next two nights is Samburu Intrepids Club, luxurious thatched-roof tents with elevated individual decks that are perfect for watching wildlife or relaxing.
After a morning game drive, travel to a nearby village to visit the school, donate some school supplies and spend time singing with the children and chatting with the teachers. Then meet a Samburu warrior in his village who tells you about his culture and traditional way of life as well as the various projects the villagers are involved with to upgrade their living standards. On a late afternoon game drive, try to spot the "Special Five" who are native to Samburu: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and the gerenuk antelope. This evening, attend a traditional Samburu dance performance.
Awaken to the sounds of the wilderness and after breakfast, board a flight across the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Transfer to Sanctuary Olonana Camp, designed by Jorie Butler Kent. Nestled on the banks of the Mara River that is crossed by thousands of wildebeest during the annual migration, Olonana offers stunning views across the river to a resident pod of hippo. The Masai Mara consists of open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers, creating an eco-system that supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species.
Early-morning game viewing is likely to reward you with unique sightings of perhaps a lion stalking their prey, a solitary leopard retrieving its kill from the high branches of an acacia tree or a male wildebeest sparring to attract females into his harem. You are in the northernmost portion of the renowned Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem that spans the border between Kenya and Tanzania, an area that Friends of Conservation (FOC) is helping to preserve. Established by Jorie Butler Kent and Geoffrey Kent in 1982, FOC is a major presence and respected stakeholder in conservation in the region. After lunch, walk with the FOC community scouts on foot patrol, observing the skills they employ as they collect and record data that alerts them to wildlife and identify issues of concern.
After an early morning game drive, visit some of the FOC's initiatives. Start your day with a cultural tour of the Enkereri village, enclosed by a circular fence made of thorned acacia branches that the Maasai call an enkang. At night, all cows, goats and sheep are placed in an enclosure in the center, safe from wild animals. Several families live in enkajiis (small, round houses) that are also within the enkang. With the support of A&K Philanthropy, FOC has engaged the village in a successful tree-planting initiative and a biogas project. After a picnic lunch, drive to nearby Olopikidong'oe Primary School, where FOC and members of the Conservation Club greet you. Join them for a tour of the school and grounds as they tell you about their typical school day and conservation projects. Visit the school museum that is filled with cultural and natural artifacts brought in by the children. Return to Olonana in time for a late afternoon game drive, followed by sundownwer cocktails in the bush. Later, sit down to a special farewell dinner.
This morning, visit the tree-planting project at Olonana that is helping reforest the region. You are invited to plant a tree before leaving the Masai Mara. Later, transfer to the airstrip for a flight to Nairobi and lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant, where you can sample an array of exotic and domestic meats. You have a dayroom at the Nairobi Serena until it's time to leave for the airport and your international flight home.
