Arrive in Friday Harbor where you are met and transferred to 'Safari Spirit.' Your captain and crew greet you with champagne and hors d'oeuvres and champagne. Begin your cruise through the northern islands of the San Juan archipelago, home to orca, seal, sea lion and many birds. After dinner, join your expedition leader for an orientation. Anchor tonight at Reid Harbor on Stuart Island.
Spend time exploring Victoria on your own. Visit the Royal British Columbia Museum and then pause for a high tea luncheon at the historic and elegant Empress Hotel. From there, proceed to Butchart Gardens for a tour before returning to the yacht.
Some of the best petroglyphs in British Columbia are found in Degnen Bay. See some of the impressive carvings of animals and abstract designs. Although the stories behind these petroglyphs have largely been lost, much work has been done by the Cowichan nation to trace cultural links to their own history on the island. Afterward, cruise through Dodd Narrows or Gabriola Passage to the Harmony Islands in Hotham Sound. You may wish to join the crew for a "natural shower" at Friel Lake Falls, a cascade that plummets 1,400 feet before relinquishing its water in a voluminous, sea level spray.
Trace the path of a now-vanished glacier, one that reached heights over 5,000 feet thick during the last glacial epoch. The fjords of Jervis Inlet and Queen's Reach snake through vertical granite mountains, offering stunning vistas at every bend. Spend a full day winding into the core of the Coast Range, stopping to feel the mist of waterfalls bounding down sheer rock faces. Continue to Princess Louisa Inlet, considered one of the 10 most beautiful locations on earth by Condé Nast Traveler. Only a half-mile wide, it is walled in by 5,000-foot mountains and culminates at the tremendous Chatterbox Falls.
Whether you choose to hike ashore, paddle a kayak out on the still waters or enjoy the scenery of Princess Louisa Inlet with a cup of coffee on the fly bridge, you are surrounded by the abounding wilderness and a calming sense of solitude. Later this afternoon, visit Malibu Club, a large resort-turned-camp that was built in the 1950s as a Hollywood getaway for movie stars and the very wealthy. Now it is a summer camp for high school kids. Tonight, 'Safari Spirit' anchors near a waterfall in Green Bay.
Travel through open seascapes and a myriad of quiet islands as you cruise toward Buccaneer Bay, located between South and North Thormanby Islands. Though nearly connected by a small sand spit, the south island consists of volcanic bedrock and broken areas of growth, while the north island is made up of fine sand and other glacially deposited materials such as boulders. There is a thriving forest here, as well as broad, sandy beaches — ideal for beach combing and walking. This afternoon, weigh anchor in Vancouver, where you have ample time to go ashore this evening.
Return to the USA today as 'Safari Spirit' cruises the open waters and islands of the Pacific Northwest. Keep an eye out for orca and other sea life along the way. Arrive at the tiny port of Roche Harbor after lunch, where you clear customs. Go ashore to visit the grand Hotel de Haro, a beautiful resort hotel that was once a Hudson's Bay Company trading post and later hosted presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Howard Taft. See the final resting place of early industrial tycoon John McMillin. This afternoon, take a walk across Jones Island, where wild deer roam. This evening, attend a festive farewell dinner.
Rise early today for morning kayaking along the shores of Jones Island before heading to Friday Harbor where you make your connection home.
