This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change. The itinerary operates in the reverse direction on alternate weeks.
You are met in Strasbourg and transferred to the barge, where the crew welcomes you on board with a glass of Champagne. You have time to take a walk or bicycle ride before having dinner on board.
After breakfast, embark on a tour of Strasbourg, stopping to visit the Beaux Arts Museum and the 12th-century Gothic cathedral. You also have time to do some shopping and explore the pedestrian area of La Petite France before returning to the barge for lunch. Afterward, cruise past the Brumath Forest to the little port of Hochfelden, home of Meteor Brewery, which has been in business since 1640.
Cruise to Saverne, a village with a history that dates back 22 centuries to the time of the Gauls. Moor at the foot of Château de Rohan, the former home of the bishops of Strasbourg. After lunch, take a scenic drive through the Vosges hills and along the Route des Grands Crus, stopping for a private wine tasting of Gewürtztraminer, Pinot Noir and Rieisling.
Wander the narrow, picturesque streets of Saverne with your guide and then visit the 11th-century Château du Haut Barr, a majestic castle with a Roman chapel and Gothic choir. Pause for a gourmet lunch in its gastronomic restaurant, overlooking the Valley of the Zorn. This afternoon, cruise to Lutzelbourg.
‘Panache’ navigates two tunnels carved into the mountaintop to the Incline d’Arzviller boat “elevator.” This unique lock allows a barge to glide effortlessly up or down the mountainside using a sophisticated system of weights and balances. Dine on a candlelit brunch while passing through two tunnels. Afterward, stop to explore the mountaintop village of La Petite-Pierre, with its medieval castle. Later, visit the Chappelle des Cordeliers with Chagall’s stained glass window depicting the tree of life. Stroll the quaint shop-lined streets of Sarrebourg, and then discover the secrets of crystal production at Valerysthal in Troisfontaines.
Cruise to the village Gondrexange and then drive to Nancy, the ancient capital of Lorraine. Embark on a walking tour of the city, beginning at the 18th-century Place Stanislas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its ornate gold and wrought iron gates, the square is considered one of the grandest in all of France. Continue to the Musée d ‘École to view its fine Art Nouveau collection. Tonight, gather on board for the captain’s farewell dinner.
After breakfast on board, return to Strasbourg.
