Day 2: Both Sides of Remarkable Budapest
Standing on opposite banks of the Danube, Budapest’s two distinct sections – Buda and Pest – were once independent cities, but in the mid-19th century were linked by the construction of the Chain Bridge to become a single city, today Hungary’s capital. Explore both Buda and Pest on a guided tour featuring a mix of architectural masterpieces and monuments including Heroes’ Square, dominated by statues of leaders from Hungarian history and surrounded by museums and stately embassy buildings; the Gothic-Revival home of the Hungarian Parliament, an iconic feature of the Budapest skyline along the Danube; and Fishermen’s Bastion, standing watch like a sentinel over the river. Please join us onboard the riverboat this evening for the Captain’s reception and welcome dinner.

Day 3: Across the Centuries in Bratislava
An ancient city with a modern vibe, Slovakia’s capital boasts an Old Town brimming with history but devoid of cars, and one of the youngest average populations of any city in Europe. Our local expert shares insider anecdotes about Bratislava before you embark on a walking tour of its cobblestoned city center, where you’ll observe 17 centuries of Slovak heritage eloquently chronicled in its 13th-century Old Town Hall, Baroque Habsburg-era palaces, the Opera House, Slovak Philharmonic Hall, and St. Martin’s Cathedral, site of the coronation of many Hungarian kings and queens. Back onboard, enjoy traditional Slovakian entertainment and regional cuisine tonight.

Day 4: Imperial Experience in Vienna
Once the capital of the old Habsburg Empire, Vienna still inspires romantic visions of “Old Europe” and ranks among Europe’s greatest cities. Wake up aboard your riverboat in Vienna for a day of sightseeing that includes your choice of a guided visit to the Habsburgs’ Schönbrunn Palace, an architectural masterpiece and Austrian cultural treasure, or a tour of the amazing Imperial Apartments at the Hofburg, Austria’s official presidential residence. Tonight, nothing quite compares to the royal treatment and pageantry you’ll experience at our private Imperial Evening in a traditional Viennese palace. Welcome cocktails and dinner precede a spectacle of elegant finery and a musical performance that celebrates the legacy of Mozart.

The twisting medieval lanes of Dürnstein – and the hilltop ruins of Kuenringerburg, the castle where England’s King Richard the Lionhearted was once held for ransom during the Crusades –invite your exploration in the heart of Austria’s vineyard-covered Wachau Valley. Cruise on to Regensburg.

Day 7: Regensburg, a Mix of Old and New
Growing from a Roman encampment on the Danube into a cultural and trading center, the quintessential Bavarian town of Regensburg boasts more than 1,400 original historic buildings. Walking here is a delight and is the only way to view the sights up-close. A local guide will lead the way as you see the town’s 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Germany’s oldest surviving stone bridge), the 15th-century Altes Rathaus (Town Hall), the towering Dom St. Peter (home to the famous Regensburger Domspatzen boys’ choir), and the remains of the Roman wall. You might want to try some of the town’s tasty Bavarian sausage, too.

Day 8: The Main-Danube Canal to Nürnberg
When it opened in the 1990s, the Main-Danube Canal made navigation between the North Sea and Black Sea possible. Learn all about it during your transit of its 16 locks en route to Nürnberg. Choose between guided excursions offering perspectives on the events of World War II, with visits to the Courthouse, the Zeppelinfeld rally grounds and the Documentation Center – or a stroll through Nürnberg’s medieval ramparts to the Imperial Castle and the old city. Sample traditional Bavarian favorites during dinner tonight at a local restaurant.
